In August of 2019, right before the start of the school year, George Washington University was performing a routine investigation of Somers Hall that ended up exposing major health hazards and structural issues on the lower level.
Sixteen of the units in Somers Hall had extensive damage from water intrusion. This damage made them unlivable just as students were about to descend on a campus without any rooms to spare.
PBI was given the project on August 10, and students were set to arrive on August 17.
Here’s how this unique challenge was resolved — and compounded:
- PBI partnered with True North Consultants to clear the units and oversee the remediation.
- Meanwhile, 20 units and 2 full hallways were added to the remediation project.
- Other necessary repairs were also discovered.
In the end, due to PBI’s decades of experience in solving complex problems and managing emergency restorations, we were able to complete the last-minute remediation of 36 units and 2 common hallways in 6 days, just in time for the school year to begin.
